When a patent is granted, the patent holder or their agent is required to submit a renewal after four years from the effective date of grant. Important to note is that renewals are submitted annually for a period of 16 years. Any failure to renew within 6 months from effective date renders the patent to lapse for non-renewal. The effect of non-renewal is that the patent falls into public domain.
